Being handed the keys to your new care is an exciting moment; but with this excitement also comes some frustration of dealing with paperwork associated with registration and insurance that is needed before rubber meets the road. Acquiring insurance doesn’t have to be a tedious chore. If you do your research and homework and know exactly what you’re after, you will be in a better position once you’re ready to get your car insurance estimate. As always, it does pay to compare and shop around.
The first thing to do is to decide what type of insurance you need: Comprehensive, Third Party Property or anything else specific to your circumstances. Comprehensive Insurance is the most costly option, but it will give you the most protection. Comprehensive covers any damage to your own car, damage to other vehicles and property, or theft. Depending on the policy, there may be optional add-ons (at an extra cost) such as cover damaged or broken windows or provide the option of a rental car to keep you on the road while your damaged or stolen vehicle is being repaired or replaced.
Third Party Property Insurance covers the damage to other the other party’s vehicle and/or property only, and will not insure any damage incurred to your own car. Third Party Insurance is much less expensive so it’s sometimes the route people take when they are driving older or used autos. Third Party with Fire and Theft Insurance covers your car against fire damage or theft or any damage you do to someone else’s automobile or property.
In Australia, it is law that drivers must have, at the very minimum, compulsory Third Party insurance. This is personal injury insurance, which covers you for any injury caused to another person in an accident. It doesn’t cover property damage.
Once you know basically, the type of insurance you are going after, you can begin seeking car insurance estimates. This is the step that it pays to acquire as much information as you possibly can. Policies and insurance estimates can vary quite a bit from one company to the next, reading the small print is vital to ensure you know exactly what is, and isn’t, covered in the policy.
While doing your research, carefully examine several different policies, and shop around for the best price; getting a car insurance estimate should not be the daunting process its reputation has. Once properly insured, then you will be ready to hit the road with your new set of wheels.
